Approach to care
When I was a child, if you had asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up I would have told you a doctor. Then I would’ve added and a scientist, and a counselor, and a teacher. I don’t know if it was by luck or fate that I found a profession where I get to be all of those things.
Becoming a doctor was a natural choice because of my love for science and medicine. In college, I studied pre-med courses in anatomy, biology, chemistry, and women’s health. Prior to applying to medical school, I traveled to Central America to work, volunteer, and study Spanish. My experiences there teaching and advocating for women and children’s access to health care reinforced my desire to practice medicine in order to live in contribution, educate and empower people, and partner with them to get quality healthcare.
I returned to the US and worked as a counselor in a residential treatment facility for adolescents with addiction and mental health issues. I observed the most effective treatments addressed the mental, emotional, and physical spheres of health. It made sense that a practitioner that focused on all of these areas could offer the most benefit to patients. I then sought out an integrative four-year medical program that combined conventional medicine and natural medicine, so I could do just that.
Today my passion is providing primary care medicine to patients of all ages. It is such an honor to help patients create a strong foundation of health so they have the vitality to fulfill their life’s purpose and do what they love. It is truly one of the greatest jobs, being a Naturopathic doctor.
